On Friday we left Johannesburg with the Norwegian Margrethe, Hilde, Vilde and May Linn, German Annika and Christophe and UK Zoe to go to our project (the rest of the volunteers went to other projects). I was very excited and at lunch time we arrived and saw allready some giraffes, zebras and ostriches on the way. At the Ukutula game farm, we get a nice tour around the area. It was bigger than I expected, they had more than 140 lions(!) and some cheetah's, hyena's, caracals and even tigers as well. Also the accomodation was very luxurous, and I had a lodge for 3 people, all by myself...
After the tour the owner, Jill, gave an explanation about the objectives of Ukutua, which means place of quiet: to do research, to give education and to provide eco tourism.
The next days we had two kind of duties: C (cubs) or R (ranger) and that switched every day (which was very nice!). At C-day we feed the 16 cubs at 7, 12 and 16 hour. The rest of the time we stayed at the cubs or prepared food (chicken and other meat). At R-day we cleaned the areas of the bigger animals and get some big food (which means dead horses or cows or sliced meat at other fams). The first day we were cleaning a very smelly fridge container, but due to all the volunteers it was fun. We got trained by other volunteers and they we're all so enthousiastic, that felt really nice and inspires me a lot. Especially two German girls Gretha and Swaantje (typical German name indeed), who were only 15 and 18 years, but they did fanatically all the hard and filthy work, admiring!
With our volunteers we had lots of fun during and after work, where we sat in the only pub of the parc, playing the famous 7 of diamonds game or chatting or party with "no clothes, no cups".
