After a long flight, I arrived at the Elements guesthouse, where I met about twenty other volunteers (90% Norwegian, and all about half my age). After a day rest, we had a tour around Johannesburg with our guide, Neil, who was a really nice story teller.
We saw the Johannesburg twin towers and after that we went to the Hector Pieterson museum. Hector Pieterson was the first person that got shot after the rebellion of students in Soweto against the poor conditions and the decision of the government to allow only Afrikaans as education language. It was a very impressive museum and the suffering and anger could be felt very closely. The day Hector Pieterson died, 16-6 is now national youth day.
We drove around Soweto to come to the former house of late Nelson Mandela. In 2007 I was also here, but a lot has been changed, then Soweto was a big slum with only small old houses, but now a lot of new buildings are build, even pubs and restaurants around Mandela's home, which is also turned into a museum.
The next day we went to the Voortrekkersmuseum, on top you should not have afraid of Heights to look down....
All together, it were nice trips, but I'm really looking forward to go to my project and work with lions again.....
